We’re hearing more stories recently about social media accounts being breached and not recovered.
Let’s take Meta as an example. It would be heart-breaking to lose years of your personal Facebook and Instagram posts… but potentially very damaging to lose control of your business accounts. Meta’s support was anything but supportive in a recent case we helped with, so you need to proactively take steps to keep your account as secure as it can be.
To protect your accounts, we recommend taking a few simple steps:
1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone or email, in addition to your password. Most social media platforms offer 2FA as a built-in feature.
When you set this up, don’t forget to grab the backup codes and keep them somewhere safe (or even print them!). These will be invaluable if you ever lose your device with the authenticator app.
2. Add another admin to your account
Granting another trusted individual admin access allows for shared responsibility and the ability to regain control of your business accounts in case of account compromise.
Be sure to choose someone you trust and who is familiar with your social media accounts.
3. Be cautious of phishing attempts
Be wary of suspicious emails, messages, or links that may trick you into revealing your login credentials. Always verify the sender’s identity and avoid clicking on links from unknown sources.
4. Keep your software updated
Regularly update your device’s operating system and web browser to ensure the latest security patches are applied. This helps protect against vulnerabilities.
5. Keep the passwords strong
Create strong, unique passwords for each of your social media accounts. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or pet names. Consider using a password manager to generate and store secure passwords.
By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorised access and protect your valuable online presence!
