12 ways your business can improve its local presence

Local marketing is especially effective for businesses with a physical location – but it’s nice for all businesses to have a presence in their local area. We’ve put together some top ideas to help you gain more local business.

Keywords

Use local keywords on your website and in your social media posts that mean both human beings and our master Google can locate you. Don’t forget about the metadata too.

Landing pages

Create a landing page for each of your locations (if you have more than one location). Do not set up a landing page for different places you’re targeting if you’re not physically there – that’s old school black hat SEO and you’ll get penalised for reams of irrelevant location-based pages.

Google Business Profile

Set up a Google Business Profile and fill it with information about your business to – quite literally – put you on the map.

Networking

Showing your face at local events is a great one for B2B businesses especially. You don’t need to be salesy, but you do need to work that room!

Targeted ads

Control the geographic reach of your ads to ensure you’re capturing the local market – you can run targeted offers just for them if you like.

Sponsor local events or teams

Great for brand awareness, think about whether you could raise your visibility locally with an awards do, event or even the local kids’ football team. But do consider your target market…

Partner with local businesses

Team up to cross-promote your businesses and don’t forget to link to each other’s websites.

Support a local charity

We think this is just kindness anyway, but why not make it local?

Direct mail

We know we’re all about the digital, but direct mail still has its place and is a great way to engage the local community.

Local press

Who still reads newspapers and magazines? Quite a few do, actually, and for some industries, it’s a very strong way of reaching their target customer base. Ads or PR – both can work!

Reviews

If you get reviews from the local area, get sharing.

Shout about your local wins

Finally (and you might just have seen us doing this), get a megaphone and shout about those brilliant projects that you’re excited about. Enthuse people!
